PROJECTS
  • Use pulverized glass from Alabama Environmental Council for mulch beds  (more info)

  • Decorate streets for Christmas

  • Take down 21st and 22nd street bridges and only replace one of them. Make it two-way with protected bike lanes and add LED lights like tunnels or another visual. The 24th St bridge is still there and we have 4 tunnels as well. Six unimpeded crossings over a 1.3 mile stretch should be fine without the 7th.

    • Take out some of the concrete half walls on 20th St N and extend seating areas

  • remove speed bump on 1st Ave S as you cross 21st Street

  • create a shuttle service using golf cart type vehicle for short trips around downtown. Possibly free or charge $0.50 or a $1 per ride?

  • Update locks on cigarette collection bins, make them more secure, collect from them once a week, and have butts recycled.

  • Get speed gun and do research project on traffic speeds -

  • Is there a way to build modular sidewalks; you could make repairs easier by swapping out sections instead of patching; would it be cheaper? maybe speak with local modular builder - Z Modular; could build somewhere else and then carry to site thus not needing a truck to come out; could build in access holes for street poles, signs, parking meters and develop a cap to go on it if its not used; makes a sidewalk easy to move since you could re-landscape and move existing segment or relocate it. Makes sidewalks reuseable especially if road repair or street widening; could also prevent cracks

  • fix lighting in 5th Ave N tunnel. Currently has 66 overhead lights with only 8 working.

  • move gravel back into parking lot at 7th Ave and 24th St as it covers the sidewalk. Also clean out area around benches, repair one bench with broken legs, and create a better sitting area.Cut limbs of tree at the benches so it doesn't cover street light.

  • Marconi Park upgrades

    • add 45 degree angle protective fence around home plate to keep foul balls from going up to the street

    • why is there a huge dirt mound just past center field

    • reseed grass with bermuda and keep it properly maintained

    • fix lights around the park that are green and meant to light up the whole area. none of them work.

  • spot with four cones in Linn Park

  • improve feeding efforts for the homeless. move them out of Linn Park and to places such as shelters or churches. create a space with bathrooms and showers for them to use. a central hub where they can find resources.

  • improve area between boutwell and art museum. too many lights are out. the water in the fountains is nasty. lights are out in the fountains. benches are unlevel. 

  • improve walkway at city hall. not enough lighting and walls on the 20th St side are nasty.

  • horribly uneven sidewalk at the NE corner of 4th Ave and 20th St

  • improve lighting in walkway tunnels from 1st Ave down to morris Ave next to 22nd st bridge
